Cleansing the Temple | Pastor Jayson Hill
Sunday Morning Service · Psalm 5:7 · Faith Baptist Church, Williston, Florida
Jesus comes to Jerusalem at the Passover, makes a scourge of small cords and drives the merchants and money changers out of his Father's house — a verse-by-verse study of John 2:13-16.
In this message:
• The Passover crowd turned the temple's outer court into a marketplace of oxen, sheep, doves and money changers (John 2:13-14)
• Making a scourge of small cords took time — this was deliberate, not a man losing his temper (John 2:15)
• The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God, so his anger is no license for ours (James 1:20)
• A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment, and be ye angry and sin not (Proverbs 19:19; Ephesians 4:26)
• The money changers upcharged worshippers for the required coinage and the leaders permitted it
• Jesus found nothing at the wedding to overturn, but he found it in his Father's house — as the Son he needed no permission (John 2)
• Crowds, coins and momentum in the temple were no evidence of God's blessing
• The believer's prayer: Search me, O God, and know my heart; see if there be any wicked way in me (Psalm 139:23-24)
• Respect of persons in the assembly is sin, and God has chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith (James 2:1-9)
• The Lord shall suddenly come to his temple as a refiner's fire and purify his own people (Malachi 3:1-3)
Scripture: Psalm 5:7 · Psalm 18:3 · Psalm 18:46 · John 2:13-16 · James 1:20 · Proverbs 19:19 · Ephesians 4:26 · Psalm 139:23-24 · James 2:1-9 · Malachi 3:1-3
Also in this service: Congregational singing of hymn 44 "And Can It Be," hymn 137 "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today," hymn 298 "God Leads His Dear Children Along" and the closing hymn 495 "The Unsearchable Riches of Christ," the echo scripture song from Psalm 18:3 and 46, opening prayer, prayer before the study, and a report on gospel tract distribution at the first Gator game of the season.
