The Great Commission
Scripture: Mark 16:15; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 10:13-15; 2 Kings 7:3-9
"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
A Sunday School lesson on the commission Christ gave His church, and on the
plain fact that it has never been rescinded.
WHAT we are to preach — not politics, not opinions, not self-improvement, but
Christ. Paul leaves no room for guessing: "how that Christ died for our sins
according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the
third day" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Salvation is not in good works, church
membership or religion, but in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
WHY it is urgent — "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"
(Romans 3:23), and "the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal
life" (Romans 6:23).
WHOSE responsibility it is — God could have sent angels, and in Scripture He
did; but He chose ordinary believers. "How shall they hear without a preacher?"
(Romans 10:14). The witness begins where God has planted us — Jerusalem before
the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8) — and for many that mission field is
the dinner table. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 gives the teaching of children to parents,
not to the school or the synagogue; Ephesians 6:4 tells fathers to bring them up
in the nurture and admonition of the Lord; and 2 Timothy 1:5 remembers the faith
that dwelt first in Timothy's grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
The lesson also takes up the different ministries within one body
(1 Corinthians 12), the readiness every believer is called to (1 Peter 3:15),
and the men who stayed with the stuff and shared alike in the spoil
(1 Samuel 30:24) — because those who pray, give and encourage have a real part
in the work.
Two illustrations run through it: a flashlight, useless in a lit room and
priceless in the dark, that must be brought back to its source before its
batteries fail (Matthew 5:14-16; Hebrews 10:24-25); and seeds that germinate on
their own timetable — some in days, some in decades, and some only after fire.
Our part is to sow and to be faithful; God gives the increase
(1 Corinthians 3:6-7; Isaiah 55:11).
It closes at the camp of the Syrians, with four leprous men who found a table
spread while a city starved behind them, and said one to another: "We do not
well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace" (2 Kings 7:9).
