Under the fig tree | Pastor Jayson Hill
Sunday School · John 1:40-51 · Faith Baptist Church, Williston, Florida
A Sunday school study through John 1:40-51 — Andrew brings his brother, Philip brings Nathanael, and Christ promises greater things than being seen under the fig tree.
In this message:
• Andrew hears John speak, finds the Messiah, and immediately goes and gets his own brother Simon (John 1:40-42)
• The mark of a true believer is a burden to see his own family saved — Paul could wish himself accursed for his brethren (Romans 9:1-3)
• A man who says he loves God and hates his brother is a liar; we care for a brother's temporal need but not his soul (1 John 4:19-21)
• Andrew is little spoken of in scripture, but he led Peter to the Lord — the Lord's requirement is faithfulness, not qualification
• Jesus names Simon a stone and recognises what He will make of him; Rome claims Peter as the foundation, but Christ is the chief cornerstone (John 1:42)
• Philip says 'we have found him,' yet it is the Lord who does the seeking and the finding (John 1:43-45)
• Philip called Him 'the son of Joseph' and still witnessed — God would rather have a willing witness than a prepared one who never goes (John 1:45)
• Nathanael's prejudice against Nazareth nearly cost him Christ; the best answer to an objection is 'Come and see' (John 1:46)
• Christ saw Nathanael under the fig tree before Philip ever called him, and promises greater things — the angels ascending and descending on the Son of man, the ladder from earth to heaven (John 1:47-51, Genesis 28)
Scripture: John 1:40-51 · Romans 9:1-3 · 1 John 4:19-21 · Genesis 28
Also in this service: Congregational singing of hymn number 30, 'Bless the Lord,' with prayer for the study of the word before the lesson and prayer at the close.
