The Mother of Jesus | Pastor Jayson Hill
Wednesday Prayer & Mid-Week Service · John 2:1-5 · Faith Baptist Church, Williston, Florida
Mary in the book of John — why Christ called his own mother woman, and how the scripture answers mediatrix, mother of God, immaculate conception, perpetual virginity and queen of heaven.
In this message:
• John 2:1-5 — Christ addresses his mother as "woman" and sets a precedent: Mary had no spiritual authority over the Son of God
• John 5:30 — he came to do the will of the Father who sent him, not his mother's will and not his own
• "What have I to do with thee" is the phrase the devils used of Christ (Mark 1:24, Mark 5:7, Luke 4:32, Luke 8:28) — no business one with another
• "Mine hour is not yet come" is the hour of the cross; the only other place Mary appears in John is John 19:26-28 — first a wedding, then a crucifixion
• There is one mediator between God and man and no mediatrix — the wedding party went to Mary, and Christ refused to take the request through her (John 2:3-4)
• God has no mother: Mary bore the vessel God inhabited, and the scripture calls her the mother of Jesus
• Romans 3 — all have sinned; only Christ knew no sin, and Mary herself called God "my Saviour" and said holy is his name, not hers (Luke 1:44-49)
• Perpetual virginity will not stand with scripture — Christ had brethren (Luke 8:19-21), and James and Jude wrote part of the New Testament
• There is no queen of heaven — Jeremiah 7:18 and Jeremiah 44:17-25 bring judgment on that incense and those drink offerings; bowing before an image is idolatry, not veneration
• Mary's last recorded words send you to her son: "whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" — let no man glory in men (1 Corinthians 3:21) and Christ has the preeminence (Colossians 1:18)
