Seven Dispensations — Prophets of Conscience
Scripture: Genesis 3:6 – 6:8; Jude 14-15; Hebrews 11:1-7
Continuing the series on the seven dispensations, this message takes up the
dispensation of conscience — the time from the fall of Adam to the flood of
Noah — and the three prophets God raised up in it.
Pastor Hill begins with a warning about the appetite for the sensational. The
more extraordinary a claim, the more it ought to be tried by the Scripture:
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God"
(1 John 4:1), and "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good"
(1 Thessalonians 5:21). A Christian goes back to the Book to settle what he
believes.
From Genesis 3 the message traces where the conscience came from — man knowing
he was guilty the moment he knew good from evil — and why there was no need of a
prophet until sin entered the world.
ABEL (Genesis 4) — the first prophet in the Bible, of whom not one spoken word
is recorded, yet whom the Lord Jesus named among the prophets (Luke 11:50-51).
His preaching was his life, and at the last his blood, which cried unto God from
the ground. He brought the sacrifice God required; Cain brought the labour of his
own hands, and it was not respected.
ENOCH (Genesis 5:22-24) — who walked with God three hundred years and was
translated that he should not see death. His one recorded sermon is a warning of
judgment: "Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute
judgment upon all" (Jude 14-15).
NOAH (Genesis 6:5-8) — who found grace in the eyes of the Lord, believed God's
word, prepared the ark, and preached righteousness while he built it
(2 Peter 2:5), to the saving of his house.
All three are named together in the eleventh of Hebrews, and their lives carry
the same marks: they believed God and followed His word, they walked with Him,
and they stood against the sin of their day.
Also in this service: the hymns "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "Be Thou My
Vision," and "God Leads His Dear Children Along"; a scripture song from Proverbs
3:5-7; and special music by Madison.
